ABOUT YOUNG ECONOMIST STUDENTS' MEET
The Young Economist Students’ Meet is an initiative pioneered by the students of the Department of Economics, Jadavpur University, and is one of the biggest Economics fests in India.
It is where the economists of tomorrow come together to debate existing ideas and create new ones. We create a platform for young students to interact with their peers, professors and professionals in a collaborative and encouraging environment.
Along with several exciting, interactive and challenging competitions for school and college students to participate in, YESM also features illuminating panel discussions and guest lectures by eminent scholars, academics, and professionals.
During the event, pertinent economic and social issues relevant to India are discussed, debated, and deliberated upon. Creativity and innovation are the hallmarks of each and every edition of YESM.
YESM has been honoured by the presence of many eminent minds from academia and industry since its dawn in 2007. Among them, the most notable are:
- • Mr. Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, founder, chairman, and managing director of Bandhan, the first microfinance institution in India to be granted a banking             licence.
- • Dr. Kaushik Basu, Professor of Economics at Cornell University, former Chief Economist at the World Bank, and former Chief Economic Advisor to the                 Government of India.
- • Dr. Debraj Ray, Professor of Economics at New York University, former Professor of Economics at Stanford University, Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Harvard University and University of Columbia, and Co-Editor of the American Economic Review.
Our objective is to focus on socioeconomic shortcomings that are pertinent globally. YESM believes that there is a solution to every problem; one has to be innovative, creative and resourceful to find it.
The students of the department of economics, Jadavpur University propose to organize the 18th edition of the Annual Inter-institutional Young Economist Students' meet on January 2026.
The theme for this edition is:
As the world metamorphoses gradually with time, it's important for us to acknowledge the various discords that go on above and beneath the surface of the world economy. The current landscape proves to be highly tumultuous due to a wide range of factors. Economic warfare is being manifested rapidly in the form of trade and tarrif wars as nations strategize using economic instruments in order to dominate the world order. On top of this, serious warlike situations in today's world have also proved to be highly influential in this aspect, manipulating social and economic scenarios everywhere.
Focusing on India, it can be seen that a number of other factors of discord still remain; domestic conflicts are still present rooted in aspects like caste, religion and gender. Apart from these, the international relationship scene for India is also becoming more and more challenging with the passing years. Be it restrictions on the H1B visa or the tarrif impositions, these changes rooted in conflict are deeply affecting the development trajectory of India.
Hence the theme focuses on aspects of conflicts and clashes having effects upon the international and domestic economy as a whole. The all encompassing topics will surely be a very helpful intellectual exercise for the interested students.
